Arthur Turner
“Recent Watercolors”
April 1 – May 13, 2023
Open House: Saturday, April 1, 1-5 pm,
Artist in Attendance 3-5 pm, Artist Talk 4 pm

Moody Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of recent watercolors by Arthur Turner, on view April 1 - May 13, 2023.  The exhibition features nearly twenty watercolors which evolved from Turner’s continued interest in landscape, abstraction, and the natural world.

“In many ways he does not paint from nature but instead cultivates the blush and bloom of nature on paper in the way a gardener tends a garden. Humility (while using a demanding medium), wonder, habit, hard work, and joy are the tools he uses to tend his practice and when the works leave the studio for exhibit they are a sensuous harvest in which the delight of the artist is as great as that of any viewer. He is clearly a master of the watercolor medium and a skillful composer but in his works the doing of nature as subject gives way to simply being natural which is visually both powerfully specific and yet seemingly egoless.” -Joseph Havel, Director Emeritus, The Glassell School of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

Arthur Turner was born in Houston, Texas in 1940, where he currently lives and works.  He received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan in 1966 and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Texas, Denton in 1962.  His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions both nationally and internationally.  Turner’s work is also part of the permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Museum of Southeast Texas, Beaumont, the McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, as well as private and corporate collections.  In 2020 Turner had a solo exhibition at The Glassell School of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, where he taught watercolor for fifty years.  He has been represented by Moody Gallery since it opened in 1975.
