Moody Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Sherry Tseng Hill. liminal being marks her first exhibition at the gallery. The artist states- “From the Latin word limen, meaning threshold, the liminal state is the gray area between two states of being, a sense of the present while glancing at that slightly distant feeling, ambiguous and unfixed, the cross-over in which self-understandings and boundaries of thought can shift and expand, and behaviors change. My work explores this feeling of being on the threshold between two things.
Living in the liminal - part of two cultures yet belonging to neither, delving into my past to understand my current self, I look closely at that feeling of being on the edge of something else. This feeling also describes my anxieties about our natural world as we know it and my yearning for renewal through behavioral change, not just biological resiliency. I brood over "what if" scenarios to cope with these feelings of uncertainty.
I collect things: bits of nature, family photographs and narratives, images, texts and information from reading and listening. These things inform my work. Using delicate and often translucent mulberry paper as the structural underpinning to reflect our fragile existence, I paint, cut, layer, unravel, stitch, and strengthen to imagine new understandings of our world, myself, and my place in it.” -Sherry Tseng Hill
